Decoding the Enigma of Artificial Intelligence: Smart Ethics Officially Unveiled

Sherin Mathew Smart Ethics

As humans have evolved, we have acquired our intelligence through the long-term development of skills, tools, and practices. This growth has given rise to society as we know it, but as the recent AI boom makes this information easier than ever to access and manipulate, the line between public and private knowledge is becoming increasingly blurred.  In my time working for leaders in AI, I have become increasingly concerned with the way tech founders are approaching their solutions with a complete disregard for public safety. That’s why I created Smart Ethics.

In this piece, I will decode the enigma of artificial intelligence and uncover how we as an industry can ensure transparency and the safety of private intelligence as we venture into the next steps of tech.

The Intangible Problem of Ethics

In today’s technology-driven business environment, the use of AI is a key part of the digital solutions that are making our lives, and jobs, easier. From creating digital content to the deployment of UK benefits, every large-scale business is seeking ways to integrate AI into their business, causing major shifts in each sector.

But while the forms of AI have evolved rapidly since it first entered our sphere, the ethics involved in its application has frustratingly remained stagnant. The reason for this stagnation is largely due to the overwhelming and intangible nature that moral guidelines usually pose. After all, when you open the moral door, you soon realise that in order to make something ethical, especially something as complex as AI-based solution, you need to make it ethically aligned with all countries, cultures, religions, ethnicities, genders, sexualities, and an infinite number of other social labels that us humans adhere to. This often feels overwhelming to developers, resulting in them taking an individualised approach. While this may seem to work in the short term, it is often caused concerns in the long term as the AI solution is evolved and developed by external parties.

Take for example, ChatGPT. When it was first released, no one could have imagined the moral questions later renditions would pose. Humans are unpredictable creatures, and the uses the public has since found for the application go far beyond its original intention, causing both legal and ethical issues that are now incredibly difficult to solve.

Now that we have opened the door to AI, we can’t close it.

Developers thinking of building an AI solution must keep this in mind to appreciate the gravity of what they are bringing to the world.

Integrating Ethics within Artificial Intelligence

So how do we start to integrate ethics into artificial intelligence, and in doing so, regulate new solutions entering the market for the safety of the public?

Two years ago, I started to think about this question in detail, as it became clear that the culture surrounding AI was unfazed by businesses’ lack of transparency. I quickly realised that businesses needed an easy to implement ethical assurance to products that would allow them to scan their AI solutions for moral issues before they went to market. In order to keep those markets as open as possible, the product also needed to be in line with global values rather than just western ones.

That’s why me and my team set out to create Smart Ethics. By working with AI experts based across the world, Smart Ethics is a key to solving AI ethical issues in just two minutes. Working in the same way an MOT assures the public and government bodies that a car is road worthy. When a company applies Smart Ethics to their solution, they are showing that their artificial intelligence has no skeletons in the closet. It is in line with global reaching legislation such as The AI Act and the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and most importantly, transparent about their user's safety.

Ethical due diligence is something that all members of the AI sector should be held to in order to embed a culture of customer safety and reduce the prospect of “AI Pollution”.
